Negative Defense Mechanisms and why they're bad
Denial- refusing to admit there is a problem
-can lead to to not take responsibility
Repression- pushing a painful thought or experience out of consciousness
-obscure the problem and allow it to get worse
Regression- going backwards in behavior and thought to a period of time when we wouldn't have to accept the blame
-tends to make others reject us
Reaction Formation- showing the opposite of what we feel
-true feelings may get worse
Displacement- taking out our feelings on someone or something other than the original target
-avoid facing problems and hurts innocent people
Rationalization- explaining away the problem so we don't have to take blame
-allows avoiding responsibility
Projection- attributing our thoughts to someone else
-allows us to not face negative things about ourselves we should change
Identification- Bolstering self esteem by forming imaginary or real alliance with a person or group
-does not allow us to accept reality and can cause further distress when aren't welcomed by the group or person
